Balti Curry 350g | SHICKEN
Can Balti Curry have a Birmingham accent?
Quite likely.
Balti became one of Birmingham’s defining food exports before spreading across curry-house menus all over the UK. The Balti Triangle became a recognised restaurant district, with restaurants serving curry straight from the thin steel bowls it was cooked in.
The name Balti is often linked to the thin steel bowl the curry is cooked and served in (see below), with balti meaning bucket in Urdu and Hindi. So part of the story is the curry, and part of the story is the vessel, quick cooking, and straight-to-table serving.

At SHICKEN Kitchen, we build ours with tomato, garlic, ginger, chillies, coriander leaf, coriander, cinnamon, cumin, black pepper, pimento, cardamom, clove, bay leaf, cassia, nutmeg, turmeric, chilli powder and fenugreek leaves.
The sauce is tomato-led, garlicky and warmly spiced, with enough depth for rice, naan, chips, or whatever you fancy that day. Ready in just 7 minutes (shorter than having a nap, or brewing a nice strong cuppa).
